Abstract: |
The case itself describes the investment policies being adopted by the Government in Northern Ireland and further discusses how this policy and strategy are implemented through the Department of Economic Development for Northern Ireland and its agencies. At the same time, this case also examines the issues that the Department of Economic Development currently has to deal with and highlights other relevant concerns, which DED recognizes as problems.
The main thrust of the case is to reinforce strategic thinking in business policy and in particular a technology strategy. To do this the students will have to understand the fundamentals of technology strategies and what really makes countries truly competitive. For example, this is not merely having very generous investment incentives and large R & D expenditures. The Country Note on the UK should also prove useful as background reading for the case, whilst also setting the context for the investment climate of the UK in general. |
