Abstract: The case is about Amer Group, a European company in the process of increasingly diversifying away from Finland, towards Europe, the USA and Southeast Asia. In early 1994, Amer belonged to the top 25 corporations in Finland, specializing in international consumer goods. Business areas include sporting goods with such brands as Wilson and McGregor, tobacco, paper, publishing and printing, and automotive with imported cars. The case is a cross-functional case, where the student should take into consideration the strategic choices (in terms of growth), implementation of those strategies as well as the issue of balance sheet constraints.

The case could be used in business programs, both MBA and in MSc programs at an intermediate/advanced level. The case is suitable to be used in a number of courses; Business Policy focusing on growth strategies and the implementation of those, either through acquisition or greenfield investment; International Business highlighting geographical diversification and its implementation in an internationalization/SME context; or International Operations concentrating more on the issue of acquisition and greenfield operations as an entry mode.
