Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the foreign exchange exposure of firms in a small, open and export-oriented economy, Finland. The research analyses weekly returns during the period of 2002-2012, taking into account the recent financial turmoil, the global financial crisis from the end of 2007 and the European sovereign debt crisis from the end of 2009.

I find that 20% of the Finnish firms are significantly exposed to a trade-weighted index during the whole sample period. Interestingly, more Finnish firms seem to gain when the euro appreciates, even though Finland is an export-oriented country (63% of the firms are positively exposed). When examining shorter sub-periods, the proportion of exposed firms is significantly smaller, ranging from 4% to 9% depending on the examined period. My evidence gives only weak support that the financial crisis increased the proportion of firms being exposed to exchange rates as the proportion grows only few percentage points during the global financial crisis and actually decreases when examining the European sovereign debt crisis. The reduction may be explained by the fact that companies reacted to the more volatile market conditions and acted to diminish their exposures.

I also examine the exposure by constructing firm-specific exchange rates and by testing single currencies instead of a trade-weighted index. These methods more than double the proportion of firms being significantly exposed, indicating that a trade-weighted index does a poor job representing the real exchange rate exposure faced by individual firms and can not be used as the only measure for the exposure. In addition, the analysis with the individual currencies shows that firms have unrecognized exposures, which are not reported on their annual reports, suggesting that firms might not recognize their currency exposure comprehensively.

At the second stage of the study, I examine the determinants behind the exposure. As the data on Finnish firms' hedging activities are not yet publicly available, I test some proxies of hedging. The results show that high debt-ratio increases the exposure, which is opposite to my expectations that firms with a higher risk of insolvency would have more incentives to hedge. On the other hand, liquidity and exposure are positively correlated, implying that liquidity serves as a natural hedge and decreases the need for hedging. In addition, bigger firms seem to be more exposed.

To take into account actual hedging data, I hand-collect firm's hedging decisions from their annual reports, i.e. the decision if a firm uses any financial hedges. The results indicate that the exposure and hedging decision are negatively correlated consistently in all examination periods, suggesting that firms that choose to hedge, are less exposed. The results, however, are not significant except for the last sub-period representing the European sovereign debt crisis. This could partially explain why the proportion of exposed firms decreased during that sample period.

Tiivistelmä

Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia firmojen alttiutta valuuttakurssimuutoksille, pienessä, avoimessa ja vientipainotteisessa maassa, Suomessa. Tutkimuksessa analysoin viikoittaisia muutoksia yritysten osakkeiden arvossa vuodesta 2002 vuoteen 2012, ottaen huomioon viime vuosien taloudelliset myllerrykset, globaalin talouskriisin vuodesta 2007 ja Euroopan velkakriisin vuodesta 2009 alkaen.

Tuloksien perusteella 20 % suomalaisista pörssiyrityksistä on alttiita muutoksille ulkomaankauppapainotteisessa valuuttakurssi-indikaattorissa. Yllättäen suurempi osuus suomalaisista firmoista (63%) näyttää hyötyvän vahvistuvasta eurosta, vaikka Suomi on vientipainotteinen maa. Tutkiessa lyhyempiä ajanjaksoja merkittävästi alttiiden yritysten osuus on huomattavasti pienempi, vaihdellen 4 prosentista 9 prosenttiin.
